LOS ANGELES (July 31, 2006)—Glen S. Fukushima, president and CEO of Airbus Japan, tendered a personal pledge of $100,000 to support leadership training and development for Asian Pacific Americans, announced J. D. Hokoyama, president and CEO of Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics, recipient of the donation. The pledge, which will span over five years beginning in October, is the largest individual contribution ever received by the national organization.
“I have been dismayed by the dearth of Asian Pacific Americans in key leadership positions in the United States and Europe,” said Fukushima, noting that he watched LEAP grow and prosper as the primary non-profit group devoted to leadership development. “Asians don’t lack the talent and ability to assume leadership, but often lack the skills that are valued and needed by mainstream culture in order to be seen as leaders. LEAP provides an indispensable service, not only to Asian Pacific Americans, but to all Asians regardless of their citizenship, ethnicity or national origin.”
LEAP will mark its 25th anniversary in 2007 as the leading Asian Pacific American organization devoted to leadership development for persons of Asian/Pacific heritage, and has set a goal of raising more than $360,000 to build and expand its programs nationally and internationally.
“Mr. Fukushima’s generous contribution is a testament to what can be achieved when people recognize that Asian Pacific Americans have the potential to thrive in all areas of our lives,” said Hokoyama, who has known the donor since LEAP was founded. “This multi-year pledge will allow LEAP to develop new training programs that support Asians who aspire to do what was unthinkable to them only a few years ago.”
Founded in 1982, LEAP’s mission is to achieve full participation and equality for Asian Pacific Americans through leadership, empowerment, and policy.
